욱 is pronounced ook, and 욱하다 is to 욱, or explode in sudden anger.

Crackle, those embers flare up once again,
devouring before they even touch any fuel
They’ll surely be swept away, yeah, yeah, mm
Today’s fighter enters the ring, yeah
once they start snapping at the prey, doong doong doong, it becomes a punching bag, doong doong doong
They jab, took took, for no reason, took took, yeah
If there’s no response, they just drown it in blood, pook pook, yeah
Truth becomes lies
Lies become truth
Here, everyone’s a person with upright ethics
and judgement – what a joke

Rage? Yeah, it’s necessary
There are reasons to flare up
This could in fact describe our own history
It can even change the world
But this isn’t rage, this is only human waste
Do you even know what real rage is?
By pretending as if it’s the real kind, you kill legitimate rage
Countless people are tired of it

You’re not just killing me
We’re used to stepping in shit
Look at those people who’ve become desensitised to it
Human waste and indifference, you’re a team
Eh

🔥  I go UGH, UGH
I go UGH, UGH
I rage against malicious rage
I rage against malicious rage

I go UGH, UGH
I rage against malicious rage
I rage against a rage that should’ve been extinguished

This world, it’s ruled by rage
It’s as if nobody can live without holding on to rage
They rage, rage, and rage
And they go crazy, UGH UGH UGH UGH
And their reasons to rage? There’s tens of thousands
But out of good will or bad, it’s all the same
Yeah, you can rage, but if it
harms another, I don’t like it
Stop that, ayy

One person’s actions pains another
One person’s words dejects another
One person’s split second becomes another’s long-lasting memory
One person’s rage becomes another’s death
Damn you, ptui!

타닥 또 타오르는 저 불씨
Crackle, those embers flare up once again,

기름에 닿기 전에 먼저 집어삼키네
devouring before they even touch any fuel

필시 휩쓸려가겠지 예 예 음
They’ll surely be swept away, yeah, yeah, mm

These three lines have a cool assurance to them. We’ll revisit this idea. For now, we’re hustled over to the next metaphor of a boxing ring.

오늘의 선수 입장하시네 [1] 건수를 [2] yeah
Today’s fighter (‘seon-soo’) enters the ring, yeah [1]

물기 시작하면 [3] 둥둥둥 동네북이 돼 둥둥둥 [4]
once they start snapping at the prey (‘geon-soo’), [2] doong doong doong, it becomes a punching bag, doong doong doong [4]
둥 (‘doong’) is the sound of a drum being hit, and 동네북 literally means ‘neighbourhood drum’. Just like we speak of punching bags, physical objects that have become a metaphor for an ‘easy’ target to abuse, so too the Koreans speak of neighbourhood drums.

툭툭 건드네 괜시리 툭툭 yeah
They jab, took took, for no reason, took took, yeah
툭 (‘took’) is the sound of a jab or tap.

반응이 없음 걍 담궈버리지 푹푹 yeah
If there’s no response, they just drown it in blood, pook pook, yeah
푹 (‘pook’) is the sound of pushing something, whether it be to push ingredients together in order to mix them, or to push an object down. It is often used together with 담그다, as it is here, which means to soak or immerse. Perhaps you’re making kimchi or other red, salted foods. This combination does have a darker, colloquial meaning too, however: to drown someone, pushing them down down — or to stab someone, pushing the knife in, in.  Notice, too, how both ‘took’ and ‘pook’ rhyme with ‘ook’ (UGH).

진실도 거짓이 돼
Truth becomes lies

거짓도 진실이 돼
Lies become truth

이곳에선 모두가 도덕적 사고와
Here, everyone’s a person with upright ethics

판단이 완벽한 사람이 돼 웃기시네
and judgement – what a joke

분노? 물론 필요하지
Rage? Yeah, it’s necessary

타오를 땐 이유가 있으
There are reasons to flare up

어쩌면 우리의 역사지
This could in fact describe our own history

그게 세상을 바꾸기도 하지
It can even change the world

But 이건 분노 아닌 분뇨
But this isn’t rage (‘boon-no’), this is only human waste (‘boon-nyo’)

뭐가 분노인지 you know?
Do you even know what real rage is?

분노인 척하며 죽여 진짜 분노
By pretending as if it’s the real kind, you kill legitimate rage

질려버린 수도 없이 많은 people
Countless people are tired of it

넌 나만 죽이는 게 아니야

☠️

This next stanza takes on the perspective of those in question. The transition is also signalled through the new musical theme and how the voices of the three rappers are mixed in together.

아 대체 욕 좀 먹는 게 왜
Man, what’s wrong with getting a little hate

잘 벌잖아 또 징징대 왜
You’re rolling in money anyway, why’re you whining yet again

그 정돈 감수해야지 에헴
You should put up with that much, ahem
The ‘ahem/ehem’ cough has an additional meaning in the Korean, as it reflects a particular manner in which the yangban, the ruling class of the Joseon Dynasty, would clear their throat to make a point. RM speaks for his generation when he makes a mockery out of such ‘kkondae seonbi bastards’ in ‘Do You’. To ascribe such a feature to these haters makes it clear what rap line thinks of them: people who think they’re learned and righteous in ‘teaching celebrities a lesson’ are really just trash.

에헴 에헴 에헴 에헴
Ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem

니네 에헴

Remember the first three lines? “Crackle, those embers flare up once again, / devouring before they even touch any fuel / They’ll surely be swept away, yeah, yeah, mm”.

Consider them alongside “I rage against a rage that should’ve been extinguished” and “Until you become ash, yeah, UGH, go UGH”.

Embers remain after a fire, continuing to radiate a high amount of heat long after its been extinguished. If not taken care of properly, these embers can rekindle a dormant fire. Rap line see these people for who they are: people who are angry for the sake of being angry, who devour their prey not because of a good and honest reason, but devour just because. And they also speak in a sure, arrogant certainty: they will, one day, be swept away and become nothing but ash.

Today, also, I returned home immediately

From the moment I enter the doorway,
it’s a time devoted to being with myself
A room full of hollow silence
After having a shower,
I disinfect my day with alcohol
Perhaps the full stop of a day, hard to remember, is alcohol

I somehow accomplished the day’s exhausting work, uh
The number of days in a week with a crushing schedule, mm, 3 or 4, uh
I’ll eat an adequate amount before I sleep, I guess, since sleep isn’t coming to me anyway
I’ll worry about tomorrow’s work tomorrow, I guess, fuck I don’t care

Now I’m feelin’ like I’m flyin’
Now I’m feelin’ like I’m flyin’

It seems I’m not reaching for the snacks for it feels as though I’d throw up if I did
I’m becoming more honest as I feel the effects; let’s see, in regards to my life
Oh yeah, money, honour, fortune –

I’m scared of those, at times,
feeling like I want to run away, mm
I thought becoming a superstar meant partying every day

Everything in dust
Do you see?
Well well well…
Everything in lust
Oh what do you see?
Well well well…
Someone tell me whether life is pain
Well well…
If there’s a god, tell me, whether life is joy

Life is a big system
Conflict, war, or if not those, survival is inserted inside
A life you can’t reject
Capital, as collateral for dreaming, injects the morphine of hope

Wealth grows wealth, and it tests greed
The rich envy even poverty, covetously
This world is black and white, only these two exist
It’s worth seeing the end of this endless zero-sum game

Polarisation, the ugliest of flowers in the world
It’s been a long time since truth has been eaten away by lies
Who’s the one to benefit most from this?
Who in the world is the one to suffer the most?

The one who isn’t sick in a sick world
is considered a mutant, isn’t that strange
The one with eyes open in a world that’s closed its eyes
is blinded now, isn’t that strange

The one who wants peace, the one who wants a fight –
the ideology’s two extremes, isn’t that strange
It tells you to have a dream, though none of them do, none
of this has an answer, isn’t that strange

💸  Everything in dust
Do you see?
Well well well…
Everything in lust

If there’s a god, tell me, whether life is joy

You think you got taste?
Oh babe how do you know?
I mean for god’s sake
Errything’s under control

The choices you’ve been given
are all preferences controlled by the capital
People talk
‘My feed explains me’
However much money you’ve got,
everyone’s a slave in this system
You’re busy boasting about your dog collar and dog house,
fighting all day about whose shines brighter
By now, even you wouldn’t know
Oh baby what’s your name?

Polarisation, the flower that’s already in full bloom;
a round nail that’s been hammered into a square hole
But still, we roll on, somehow, just like this
Everyone says it’s okay in their own chicken coops

The one who isn’t sick in a sick world
being treated as a mutant isn’t strange to me; rather,
the one with their eyes open in a world with its eyes closed –
it’s stranger to me that only they opened their eyes
The one who wants peace, the one who wants a fight
The word games that change easy as the flipping of palms
It’s the kind of world where a dream has become an option, but
there’s no answer – that’s the answer

I got a big house big car big ring, bring anything over, I’ll give it to you, my black card

미디어의 혜택을 받은 새끼들은 나보다 방송을 많이 타고
The bastards that received media benefits were on air more often than me

돈 자랑하는 애새끼들 벌어봤자 얼마나 벌었겠냐 싶어
and the brats that boast about their money, you have to wonder how much they could’ve actually earnt

Woo woo 그래 이제 돈 자랑들은 뭐 귀엽지
Woo woo, yeah, money boasts are only cute to me now

Woo woo 분배는 니 급 쯤에서나 아깝지
Woo woo, dividing it only feels bad at your level
That is, even though BTS only receive a portion of what they’ve earnt for their company, and then have to divide it by seven for each member, it’s still a lot of cash. They be hella rich.

Woo woo 군대는 때 되면 알아서들 갈테니까
Woo woo, we’ll be sure to go to the military when it’s time, so

우리 이름 팔아먹으면서 숟가락을 얹으려고 한 새끼들 싸그리 다 닥치길
All the bastards who tried to sell our name to freeload off us, shut up
Literally, this line speaks of the bastards that tried to ‘place their spoon [on the fully prepared table]’. This continues the rice metaphor, and describes the act of swooping in and taking in what’s not yours, for while others slaved away to cook the feast, you’ve slid in right at the end without an ounce of shame. Calls for BTS to earn military exemption were rife in 2018-19 with their growing number of accolades in the West. The suggestion here is that many slyly pushed for this discussion in the shadows, for if the amendments were made, this would have created a precedence benefiting other artists. Big Hit and BTS kept to their line that they would go when they were called as was their duty.

저 달 (Moonlight)

저 달, literally ‘That Moon’, is Track 1 of D-2, the second mixtape released by SUGA under the name Agust D on May 22nd, 2020.

A line-by-line translation follows the clean version.

Produced by Agust D, GHSTLOOP

Clean Translation

(Yeah, yeah
Okay, okay, okay, okay
Yeah

It’s been three years
Agust D!
I honestly don’t know how many songs to put in,
just, fuck, you just gotta do it)

My beginnings were humble; from Daegu, yeah, a basement in Namsan-dong
to a penthouse in Hannam the Hill, ha
Still a Peter Pan unable to wake from a dream
The realities of my mind fight with the ideals, tiresomely
My greatest enemy is the anger within me
It fights with the even worse laziness within me
At times, I resent god: why do you have me live this way
What am I doing, do I really even love music?

And at times, I ask again: if you could go back,
would you? Well, I’d have to ponder on that
It can feel as though the things I have were easy to obtain
and then, fuck, it’s as though they were compensations for my hardships
I’m still hungry – is this what they call karma?
As a result of flying so damn high, there’s a hollowness I feel
Though it’s been over 10 years since I began in Namsan-dong,
it’s the same as it was then, the confusion in my mind,  fuck that

☾  That moonlight I meet before the dawn
It’s still the same as it was then
So many things in my life have changed, but, well,
that moonlight is still the same

☼  That moonlight I meet before the dawn
It’s still the same as it was then
Change is inevitable for everyone
How we undergo change could in fact be our occupation

At times, I think I’m a genius
and at times, it feels as though I have no skill in it
Sometimes, the track comes to me crazy fast, but
when I get mindblocked again, it’s endlessly blocked; that’s right, even now,
though I wrote Verse 1 super fast,
Verse 2 really isn’t coming to me, even as I rack my brains
I guess life’s the same, it’s all or nothing
After all, there are no parallels, you’ve got to choose

I guess eternity doesn’t exist, in anything
Immortality feels like such pressure, and
I only started this because I liked music,
but the descriptors they add to my name are burdensome at times

What can you do, you’ve just got to run, I guess
What can you do, you’ve just got to hold onto the things you’ve grasped, I guess
What can you do, you’ve just got to repay what you’ve received, I guess
If you feel like you’re going to crash, accelerate harder, idiot

We are Bulletproof : the Eternal

As the title suggests, this track samples ‘We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2’, track 2 of their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Their pre-debut zeal, laced with fear and desperation, is outlined in the first two stanzas. Many of the lyrics are also reminiscent of Pt. 2’s refrain:

Everywhere I go, everything I do
I’ll show it to you, as much as I’ve sharpened my sword
The many people who disregarded me, now
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh) hey shout it out
Oh! Throw rocks at me if you’ve worked as hard as I have
We go hard, we’re are not afraid”

All we had were dreams –
opening our eyes only to dim mornings,
dancing and singing all night long to
those endless music scores
악보: music scores/sheets, but also bad news

Ay we shout heartily
“throw in all we’ve got!”
Our first fight with the world
Don’t wanna die
But so much pain
Too much cryin’
So, the dulling of the blade

❅ Oh I
We were only seven
I
But we have you all now
After seven winters and springs,
with the ends of our interlocked hands,
Oh I
Yeah we got to heaven

❆ Throw rocks at me
We’re not afraid
anymore
We are we are together bulletproof
(Yeah we have you have you)
Even if winter comes again,
even if someone blocks me, I walk forward
We are we are forever bulletproof
(Yeah we got to heaven)

We are bullet bullet bulletproof
Facing the negative attention head-on, we achieved it, and
the bad memories and many hardships were also
blocked heartily by us, bulletproof

I often wonder
whether we’re still dreaming
At the end of a long winter,
is the thing that has come truly spring?
Something they all mocked,
something that we were embarrassed of – our name
This has been proven through iron:
Bullet-proof.

Oh oh
I don’t want to pause ever again,
for we are together here
Tell me your every story
Tell me why you don’t stop this
Tell me why you still walkin’
Walkin’ with us
(Yeah we got to heaven)

(Yeah we have you have you)
Yeah we are not seven, with you
Yeah we are not seven, with you

Yeah we are not seven
With you

Respect

The word ‘respect’ is thrown around without much thought in Korea by the younger generations; one of many English words that has morphed into something else entirely.

RM and SUGA have shared that the lyrics to this track are based on a conversation they had two years ago, and that the recording was completed in one go!

The back-and-forth nature of the dialogue is crucial, so RM’s lines are in black and SUGA’s in green.

Put your hands in the air
(Put your hands in the air)
Just like you don’t care
(Just like you don’t care)

Ayo SUGA, (What’s up?) a word that floats around me these days,
Respect – but I’m a little confused by its meaning nowadays (Hm?)
They do that apparently, to someone, whenever they do something (Why?)
I don’t know too well either, brotha, how would I know?
For sure, it ranks over love
Perhaps it’s the highest of all ranks
that exist, this thing,
respect – isn’t that what they’re saying, huh?

Re-spect – as the word itself says, it’s to look and look again*
If one keeps looking at another, their flaws can be seen
But that one wants to keep looking, despite all that,
means that it’s necessary to have complete faith in that someone
And so, I can’t speak of it easily –
it’s immeasurable, the weight and depth of it
I hope that, someday, I’d be able say it confidently,
wholeheartedly – to me, and to you

Please, don’t speak so easily of respect, yeah –
for I still don’t know it well either, yeah
for I still get scared of myself sometimes
What if they see through to the weak me

(Respect) They speak of it so easily
(Respect) when they don’t know what it is
(Respect) That they’d re-spect
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Two times
(Respect) I don’t want to speak of it so easily
(Respect) Even if I don’t know it too well yet,
(Respect) I’ll say it someday
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Oh yeah

What is respect (What is it, hyung?)
Dude, I’m asking because I don’t know (Oh, really?)
What even is respect
that everyone speaks of it
I honestly can’t understand it
Was respecting someone
always so easy?
I still can’t understand it
Let’s be real, we don’t need respect
(That’s right, hyung!)
when we don’t even have basic regard (Yup!)
That they’re talking behind your back*,
everyone knows about it except for you, y’know
I honestly respect you
Since I have zero expectation that you’d also respect me, don’t bother
Respect, I respect you
To that friend who’s cursing you out while smiling at you, give a round of applause

(Respect, respect)
I hope your life would flourish with honour and prosperity
(Respect, respect)
I hope your future would be accompanied by eternal blessings
(Respect, respect)
Money, fame, forward, forward*
(Respect, respect)
Yeah, I respect you, yeah

(Respect) They speak of it so easily
(Respect) when they don’t know what it is
(Respect) That they’d re-spect
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Two times
(Respect) I don’t want to speak of it so easily
(Respect) Even if I don’t know it too well yet,
(Respect) I’ll say it someday
(Respect) One time
(Respect) Oh yeah I’ll

SG and RM’s spoken dialogue, employing the drawling satoori of SUGA’s hometown Daegu

SG: Hey, do you know ‘respect’?
RM: No, I don’t
SG: Me neither
RM: Why’s it so difficult?
SG: To admire!
RM: Are they telling us to re-spect? I don’t know –
SG: To have basic regard!
RM: Hu-uh?
SG: To have basic regard!
RM: To admire!
SG: Well, wouldn’t it be these things ..
RM: English is hard
SG: Yeah, I know right ..

Notes

– We know RM is fond of wordplay, but he particularly likes considering the syllables that make up a word (I’m thinking of him splitting Pluto up in 134340, of having considered ‘see’ and ‘saw’ if he had done ‘Seesaw’ instead of SUGA, of the ㅇ turning into a heart once sat on for Trivia: Love). He continues it here, considering the two parts of “respect” – re & spectare (to behold, look at).

– The line I’ve translated as ‘talking behind your back’ in Korean literally speaks of shelling pumpkin seeds in the back. Fun. Replacing one idiom for another.

– “Money, fame, forward, forward” is of course reminiscent of the refrain “dream, hope, forward, forward” in their HYYH track ‘Epilogue: Young Forever’. If they’re of the same vibe, cool. If, however, it’s a bit more cynical in this instance, you could take that stanza, and the lines above it, to all be said in a wry tone. After all, why say they’re respecting others when they promise not to use it lightly, not to use it yet? That is, “sure, I respect you (as if)”.

Sung by Jin

When was it, that the moon and earth
began to be together like this?
You, who shine simply by existing –
is it fine to stick by your side?

⭐ You are my earth
To you, I’m just a moon,
your little star that brightens your heart
You are my earth
and all I see is you
It’s all I can do, to simply gaze at you

Everyone says I’m lovely, but
my sea is in fact pitch-black
A star where flowers bloom and the sky’s deep blue –
the one that’s truly lovely is you

🌙 Suddenly I wonder whether you’ll also be looking at me now,
if even my painful scars will all be caught by you
I’ll circle you
I’ll be by your side
I’ll be your light
All for you

I didn’t even have a name
before I met you
You gave me love, and
now you’ve become my reason

In the crescent moon night
Even if I close my two eyes, you surge into me, blue
In the full moon night
Even if I open my two eyes and pour you in, would that be fine?

🌙

Even in the bright day,
even in the dark night –
for you, who watches over me
Even when I’m sad,
even when I’m in pain –
for you, who continue to shine on me

Rather than using any other words
or words of thanks,
I’ll make sure to be by your side
In the dark, dark night,
so that it’s much brighter,
I’ll watch over you

Suddenly I wonder whether you really know yourself,
whether you really know how pretty your existence is
I’ll circle you
I’ll be by your side
I’ll be your light
All for you

🌙

Notes

I didn’t even have a name

before I met you
You gave me love, and
now you’ve become my reason

The above stanza references the poem ‘Flower’ by Kim Chun Soo, and in doing so, Jimin’s previous solo song ‘Serendipity’

Flower

Before I called their name,
they were nothing
but a gesture.

When I called their name,
they came to me and
became a flower.

Just as I called their name,
that one who suits my colour and fragrance
would call my own.
I too want to go to them and
become their flower.

All of us yearn
to become something.
You to me, and I to you:
an unforgettable gaze is what we yearn to become.

Kim Chun Soo

The poem, and therefore these lyrics, use the metaphor of a flower blooming under another’s interest to speak of love. The giving of a name is what gives life to one, as is the giving of love.

Seoul sparkled particularly brightly
A different world I was seeing the first time
You, who I met when soaked with sweat,
were a somewhat strange kid
You, who I met when soaked with sweat,
were a somewhat strange kid

Me from the moon, you from a star
Our conversations felt like homework
One day, bffs, another, enemies
I just wanna understand

Hello my alien
We’re each other’s mystery
Is that why it’s even more special

🤞 Someday, when the cheers die down, stay hey
Please stay by my side
Forever, always in this place stay hey
Just like your small pinky

☀️ Longer,
than the seven summers and cold winters
Longer,
than the countless promises and memories

I remember us in our school uniforms
Our memories, each and every one of them, a movie
The dumpling incident a comedy movie, yeah yeah

The chatter that filled our bus rides home
Now we go out on drives together
We’re unchanging, the ‘us’ of back then
Hey Jimin, today”
[wanna grab a drink?]

The dreamcatcher in my room
7 years of history
Is that why it’s even more special

🤞

☀️

Just like your pinky,
we’re still the same
I know all about you
We must trust each other
Don’t forget
Rather than the obvious words of thanks,
you and me,
let’s make sure that tomorrow, we don’t fight

💛 Someday, when the cheers die down, stay hey
You are my soulmate
Forever, always in this place stay hey
You are my soulmate

☀️

💛

☀️

Note

We thankfully didn’t have to wait too long to learn about the dumpling incident. V replied to a question about it on Weverse, the day of album release:

OP: Taehyung-ssi, Jimin-ssi Please tell us about the dumpling incident!!
V: It was between the opposing parties ‘Do the choreo and then eat it’ and ‘We’ll eat it as we do it’

Sung by V

Us back then,
we had a really hard time,
as we looked up at
those sky’s stars so very far away

You back then,
you don’t believe in the galaxy
But I’ve seen it,
that silver galaxy

It would’ve hurt,
it would’ve been so hard,
for I raced after
a light with no end

🚪 I can taste the biting air of that summer’s day,
the sounds of the grey pavements which felt so cold

I drink in a breath and knock on your door
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change

Us now,
I’d like it if we laughed a lot
It’ll be okay, for the me of today
is doing okay

You yesterday,
I see it all now
I want to embrace
the many thorns within the budding rose

The kid with the smile
The child that only smiled so innocently
When I see this you,
I can’t help but laugh

🚪

Tonight,
if my hand touches yours,
could you hold that hand?
For I’ll become you

You just need to
see my galaxies,
You just need to be hit by those stars
I’ll give my world to you

For the lights that illuminated your eyes
are me now
You’re my boy, my boy
My boy, my boy, my boy

We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change
We gon’ change

Notes

The tense of the second stanza’s first two lines ‘
You back then, / you don’t believe in the galaxy’ feels a little strange. ‘You back then, / you didn’t believe in the galaxy’ would sit more comfortably. However, it better reflects the present tense used there in the Korean, in contrast the simple past of the first stanza. It certainly makes the dialogue between young Taehyung and current Taehyung feel more immediate, just as the repeated stanza does later, where we see the latter knock on the former’s door.

We know RM and V both worked on the lyrics for this song, amongst others. There are particular words that whisper RM’s name, such as ‘잿빛’, translated here as ‘grey’; a rarer word that appeared in RM’s ‘seoul’ from mono. However, the most obvious word is surely of the ‘galaxy’.

The galaxy is certainly a theme used often by BTS, especially by RM. In the third last stanza, you see it paired with the line ‘You just need to be hit by those stars’. This is reminiscent of lines from ‘Answer: Love Myself’: ‘Is it that I fell in order to be hit by those countless stars / In the thousands of glittering arrows, the only target is me’. The action both holds the same root in Korean – 맞다 (to be hit / struck / shot), and so the link between the two songs is particularly strong.

In the last question for a Q&A I did, I drew out the symbolism of these two objects. The galaxy, above and within us, is a landscape of our lives – and the stars are the necessary additions that give it colour. Some of those additions, however, are painful. These, too, must be faced if we are to love ourselves. And once we have, it will become part of the constellation that we look fondly upon.

Bringing together these ideas gives the song another layer of warmth, and displays the reason why V can say his current self is doing okay — he has experienced much, and is okay.

The thought that the two members would’ve traded many thoughts about this topic in the process of becoming satisfied with the lyrics is a lovely one.
