Don’t

“그러지 마”, featuring RM, is track 1 of eAeon’s album Fragile, released April 30th, 2021. They have previously collaborated together for “badbye”, track 4 of RM’s second mixtape mono. The official English title is “Don’t”, but it can also be translated more literally as “Don’t Be Like That”.

Translation choices are explained in the line by line translation below.

Clean Translation

Please, don’t speak yet
I know what you’re about to say
Don’t avoid my eyes
Please, please don’t be like this

We’re the ones who made this place, aren’t we?
We’ve dealt with times more difficult than this, haven’t we?
This sort of thing can’t be our end, can it?
There’s still so much we haven’t been able to do

Please, don’t leave this place
Too much is crumbling
Please don’t break us
You’ll break with it
Please don’t, don’t leave
Don’t throw our
everything away, please don’t do this

What colour are the waves, usually?
For they’re pure white when they break
Were those prior times adrift okay for you?
Can’t you remain here as a pebble?
Please turn on the moon
Please don’t leave my small chimney
Please don’t take away the name that only you know
I don’t need magic
I don’t need any old wildflower
Don’t be like this
Just, [stay] here

Please, don’t leave this place
There’s no place like this elsewhere in the world, after all
Please don’t break us
Then our one heart will be divided
Please don’t, don’t leave
Don’t throw our everything away
Please don’t do this

Don’t you still love me?
Because it’s not the end, then
Please don’t say words you don’t mean
I know you also want me to hold you back

Please, don’t leave this place
There’s no place like this elsewhere in the world, after all
Please don’t break us
Then our one heart will be divided
Please don’t, don’t leave
Don’t throw our everything away
Don’t

Please, don’t leave this place
Too much is crumbling
Please don’t break us
for you’ll break with it
Please don’t, don’t leave
Don’t throw our everything away,
please don’t do this

Line by Line Translation

그대 아직 말하지 말아요
Please, don’t speak yet
The word ‘그대’ (geu-dae) is repeated throughout this song. It is a way to refer to the second person, ‘you’, in a loving and respectful manner. It is, however, not used in conversation, but reserved for artistic forms such as poetry or music. This word has not survived the translation process, because archaic forms like ‘thou’ or endearments such as ‘dearest’ weigh the statements down — and there’s a lot of them in this song. I have, instead, chosen to add ‘please’, to suggest a gentleness in the speaker’s pleading.

그대 무슨 말 할지 알아요
I know what you’re about to say

나의 눈을 피하지 말아요
Don’t avoid my eyes

그대 제발 그러지 말아요
Please, please don’t be like this
The additional ‘please’ here is to reflect the 제발 in the Korean.

지금 여기를 만든 우리잖아
We’re the ones who made this place, aren’t we?
The official MV called what I’ve literally translated as ‘this place’ home, which is highlighted through the scenes they chose to film. This line and the two that follow all use the -잖아 ending, one that expects/hopes for an agreement from the other. For example, A may ask “Hey, should we eat?” and at B’s response “Why?”, A will say “Because you’re hungry~” in a cajoling manner. Again, quite hard to translate, but I’ve tried to reflect it by pushing the English translation along by embedding a question within the statement. I don’t do this for echoes of the -잖아 ending in later verses, because it does get quite unwieldy, but I hope it helps set the scene. The rest of eAeon’s verses flits between a formal form of language and this style of cajoling informal form. (RM’s verse is interestingly only in the formal form, and uses a more straight-forward style of questions.)

더 힘든 시간도 견딘 둘이잖아
We’ve dealt with times more difficult than this, haven’t we?

이런게 우리의 끝은 아니잖아
This sort of thing can’t be our end, can it?

아직 우린 못다한 일이 많아
There’s still so much we haven’t been able to do

그대 여길 떠나지 말아요
Please, don’t leave this place

너무 많은게 무너지잖아
Too much is crumbling

우릴 부수지 말아요
Please don’t break us
Unlike the above verb which suggests external pressure, the breaking here would be a purposeful (and final) action.

그대도 같이 부서지잖아
You’ll break with it

그러지 마 떠나지 마
Please don’t, don’t leave

우리의 (1) 전부를 (2)
Don’t throw (3) our (1)

버리지 마 (3) 그러지 말아요 (4)
everything (2) away, please don’t do this (4)
The above two lines had to be rearranged for it to make grammatical sense in the English.

파도는 원래 무슨 색일까요
What colour are the waves, usually?

부서질 땐 새하얗잖아요
For they’re pure white when they break

그간의 표류는 괜찮았나요
Were those prior times adrift okay for you?

여기 조약돌로 남아주면 안 돼요
Can’t you remain here as a pebble?
In RM’s ‘Thanks To’ for Be, he had finished by saying “I would like to be your pebble.”

달을 켜줘요
Please turn on the moon
This line was previously seen on a page of RM’s draft lyrics for “Blue & Grey”, of BTS’ 2020 album Be.

작은 내 굴뚝을 떠나지 마세요
Please don’t leave my small chimney
This is the line which internally gives weight to a more metaphorical translation of ‘this place’ to ‘home’. Perhaps then, ‘Please stay underneath my small chimney’ is another way to view the line.

그대만 아는 그 이름 가져가지 마세요
Please don’t take away the name that only you know

마법은 필요 없어요
I don’t need magic

아무 들꽃은 싫어요
I don’t need any old wildflower

새삼스럽지 말아요
Don’t be like this

그냥 여기에
Just, [stay] here

그대 여길 떠나지 말아요
Please, don’t leave this place

세상 어디에도 여긴 없잖아
There’s no place like this elsewhere in the world, after all

우릴 부수지 말아요
Please don’t break us

하나의 심장이 나눠지잖아
Then our one heart will be divided

그러지 마 떠나지 마
Please don’t, don’t leave

우리의 전부를 버리지 마
Don’t throw our everything away

그러지 말아요
Please don’t do this

아직 나를 사랑하지 않나요
Don’t you still love me?

그럼 아직 끝이 아니잖아요
Because it’s not the end, then

맘에 없는 말은 하지 말아요
Please don’t say words you don’t mean

그대도 내가 잡아주기를 원하고 있잖아
I know you also want me to hold you back

그대 여길 떠나지 말아요
Please, don’t leave this place

세상 어디에도 여긴 없잖아
There’s no place like this elsewhere in the world, after all

우릴 부수지 말아요
Please don’t break us

하나의 심장이 나눠지잖아
Then our one heart will be divided

그러지 마 떠나지 마
Please don’t, don’t leave

우리의 전부를 버리지 마
Don’t throw our everything away

그러지마
Don’t

그대 여길 떠나지 말아요
Please, don’t leave this place

너무 많은게 무너지잖아
Too much is crumbling

우릴 부수지 말아요
Please don’t break us

그대도 같이 부서지잖아
You’ll break with it

그러지 마 떠나지 마
Please don’t, don’t leave

우리의 전부를 버리지 마
Don’t throw our everything away,

그러지 말아요
please don’t do this

In an interview prior to its release, eAeon said that he sent RM the accompaniment designating a particular part of it for him without any direction or advice, but RM returned it having perfectly completed not only the lyrics and melody but the vocal arrangements as well. When eAeon played RM the finished track, RM said that “It’s good to the point I wonder if it’s possible to be this satisfied. I’m happiest when making/doing good music.”

At its release, RM shared on Twitter the following words: “I worked together with @eaeon, whom I love and respect, for hyung’s album. I personally think this is a good song that came together reallyreally well. Please listen to it a lot !! Thank you”

RM’s Weverse Post, 210101

2020 is leaving us.

This year was one that mercilessly mocked our high expectations for it. ‘A performance without an audience, a stage without their cheers.. Is this really something that makes sense? Is it?’ Indifferently repeating and brooding over this statement as I sit on the chair of the studio waiting room, the one that looked the same yesterday as it did the day before. Thinking that a world has come where ‘nonsense’ is what makes sense.

A lethargy indifferently learnt like water that falls from a rock’s crevice. The fingers that tell me to stay in the same place, to just remain there, even though I feel as though I should kick my seat over and stand up to try and resist all the things that symbolise discouragement. The books that I read and reread, the unfamiliar things that I try which begin with the phrase ‘untact’*. The home workouts. The delivery foods. Wouldn’t it have been a year that we tried all the things possible within a small room?
Though, of course, it continues to be this way..
[Note: ‘Untact’ was coined as a term to oppose ‘contact’, the negative prefix insinuating a form of contact that is undertaken while physically apart.]

At any rate, time goes on, and the world keeps spinning. We are the people who lived through a year that we believed would never end, who have survived, and who wait for the spring. Would spring really come this time, would it truly? It makes me think that a person must be one who, whilst trying not to anticipate something in fear of disappointment, still clings tightly to an flimsy thread of hope, for it must exist if there is to be a reason to wake up. And, as I engrave into my heart the knowledge that even in such a cold winter, I am still receiving the affections and attentions of many, I try uttering decisively to myself that I will not snap easily.

Though there may not be anyone beside me, I am listening to myself.

To farewell the year, I aimed to write things in a short and sweet manner, but seeing the words that keep biting at each other’s tails, it seems I’m far off from becoming a wide, wide tree. Lucid and hazy words and imaginings climb up the back of my head, growing even as I prune them every day. I guess it’s just the shape that I am, that if I push a hand up into the air, I feel as though I wouldn’t be able to live without stirring it. The adults around me have said that I’m the kind of person that needs my curiosities sated. And emphatically at that, too. Hehehe.

These days, I felt good if there was at least no fine dust in the air. I feel this way more so than before. Like my baseline of expectation has decreased spectacularly? Is it a good thing, to be this easily satisfied? If so, what if suddenly, perhaps now, I could actually perform live in front of you all? Why is it that the things that had seemed so natural now feel like such a dream.. ha ha. I am trying to consider it this year’s reproach for not having considered the precious things precious. While we may not know it yet, won’t there have been many lessons for us to take away? I only hope that it won’t take too long to recognise them.

The sunset is hanging off these eaves. To the great number of dust particles that endeavour, much like myself, to float so as to remain in this blue dot in some form* – and to the familiar cold smiles and animosities of the outside which threaten us and try to swallow us whole – I write a letter to you. To say that this year was not in vain. Though only the word ‘love’ comes to mind, I write once again in wandering search of better words, of words that are alike and not alike. Thank you for readily being by my side through the tiring itineraries of these exhausting everydays.
[Note: RM’s stanza in ‘Blue & Grey’ refers to the grey dust of the grey city; the scientist Carl Sagan popularised the term ‘pale blue dot’ to describe the Earth.]

I simply wish that you would be healthy, and that you would laugh with me often. Let’s walk together, towards spring days that seem more like spring days. I love you. You worked hard this year also. It would be good if we could be a strength to you.

Do remember they can’t cancel the spring.
[Note: This one line was written in English, and is in fact the title of a David Hockney artwork painted in lockdown. RM has previously shared a picture in front of his exhibition, and has been seen reading A Bigger Message: Conversations with Davis Hockney in a Bangtan Bomb.

Receive a lot of new year blessings!

Snow Flower

V released this Christmas song in 2020 on the BTS Blog as the clock struck midnight in Korea.

Produced by V, Peakboy
(V, Peakboy)

Lyric Translation

Hey snow
It’s coming today
What should I prepare
The preparations to meet you are done, ok

Fallin
above a grey canvas
You can blanket it
I’ll give you the world

You coming in this cold season
is a special event for me
Your warmth will melt
my blue and grey

Christmas without you would just not be Christmas at all
Bright mistletoes up above us, it’s just you and me

‘I love you’

That the world, through white flowers,
would make our time more precious
That the flowers would fall on your sad smile
within these moments of stopped time

When the world is dyed beautifully white,
I’ll suffuse those faded colours
There are many white angels here and there this year so
take a deep breath and have a look at those flowers that resemble you

Feel the warmth by my side
Please hold me with your pretty, ice-cold hands
I’ll continue to protect you
I’ll be struck by the white snow with you forever

Did you see the snow?
Like your eyes
Believe in Santa Claus?
I’ll take a warm present
with you
Every time this season comes, like the tip of your nose,
fall in love
I’m just feeling
Please be by my side
I’ll match your footsteps
and sing this song

‘You make me wanna be a better man’

That the world, through white flowers,
would deepen the mood between us
That the flowers would fall on your bright smile
below the stopped street lamp

V’s Message

I believe that there would be a personal uneasiness and gloominess that would befall many of us as the end of year approaches due to the feeling of stopped time. I hurriedly made this in an apologetic heart to ARMY, as I continued to fall behind on my mixtape. I believe that this year would feel like one of stopped time, and as the end of year approaches, there would be an uneasiness and gloominess that would befall many of us.* It would be good if, at least on this day, white flowers would fall into your hearts so you could feel a warm consolation and joy. I really want to thank the many white angels of this year  hehe Thank you. And my Wooga friend Peakboy featured in this. Happy holiday!😊

[Note: I think he was choosing between the two ways of phrasing this idea, and accidentally copied both into his message!]

Christmas Love

Jimin released this track at 12pm KST on Christmas Eve 2020 on BTS’ blog. The Korean lyrics and his letter can be found there.

Produced by Slow Rabbit
(Slow Rabbit, Jimin, RM)

Lyric Translation

Christmas I love you
You’re the one

Oh I been waitin’ for this Christmas Day

In my heart, I’m already on these white streets
In last night’s dream, the snow fell
You, who I waited for all day within my blankets

❄️ Christmas I love you
Like the white snow
that falls and falls to become a blanket of snow,
you fall into my day

Christmas I love you
Oh you’re the one

I wish this day was
forever ❄️

💙 Christmas love
Christmas love

Please remain in my heart
for a long while

Christmas love
Christmas love
Long awaited
Today it’s Christmas Day 💙

I even try running with all my might, like that child over there
I feel as though I’m flying above the clouds
If someone is listening to me,
will you please stop time as it is now?

❄️

Honestly, I’m scared you’ll leave
Since today is short,
will you remain a little longer with me,
who had waited for you?

❄️

Message by Jimin

Hello ARMY, it’s Jimin.
Have you received my Christmas present to you well?
I wanted to make sure to share this with you, so I’m really really happy that I’ve been able to do so.
I have come to you like this today to explain my reasoning a little; the reason why I’ve decided to share this bright song with you in such a difficult period of time. It’ll be clear if you look at the meaning of the song, but it’s one that contains the feelings that I felt in my childhood as I first saw the snow that I like so much fall heavily.

I believe we grow to miss our childhood greatly as we mature.

I think that whatever we’re like now, we are reminded of – and wish to return to – a time in which we had a childlike, untarnished purity.
It has me think that as we mature and the responsibilities we must hold develop us, we must begin to hide our feelings a little.
However, I also think that we continue to have such feelings.
And so, what would it be like, to express such feelings – albeit juvenile – for once?

I thought that it would be good if that one day could be today.

You are all always worthy of love.
So it would be good if there was a chance for us to share not these cheesy words of every day, but a time which we could all enjoy, though it may leave us bashful.
Though it is a song that does not reflect the grand scale of my words,
I have made it with the one hope that you could all be people of joy.
It would be good if you could, at least for a moment, return to an earlier time treasured in your memories.

Mnet Asian Music Awards 2020

The 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) was held online on 6 December. BTS won eight awards at the event, as well as being recognised as one of the ten . Translations of their award speeches are below. Videos will be added to this page as they begin to be uploaded by the official channel. The award names are linked to the relevant tweet thread.

Best Dance Performance

JM: ARMYYY!
RM: Whoo hoo!

JM: We’ve been able to meet in this way once again. First, we thank ARMY greatly for giving us such an award. And to Teacher Son Deuk, Byungwoonie hyung, Sungwoon-nim, Gawon-nim, the performance team, thank you to all of you. And honestly, our bodies need to be in good shape to be able to perform well, so we thank the hyungs of our conditioning team.

Honestly, the reason we pursue great performances is to showcase a good stage, and the reason we pursue a good stage is so that we can allow the fans who cheer us on to delight their eyes and ears, so today too, with many of these artists having prepared such great stages, the reality of being unable to face you is honestly a bit of a shame. But despite this, for cheering us on, we thank you. We hope that a time where we can see each other face to face comes quickly. We thank you always for cheering us on, and we’ll be a BTS that continues to work hard.

RM: SUGA hyung, get better soon!
J: You have to come for us to be able to showcase a true performance!

Album of the Year

JH: Papa Mochi!
RM, V: Hey, Corden!
JM: Woo ow! Everyone, ARMYs, thank you so much! Some of you may not be aware, but SUGA hyung is currently recuperating, and because you gave us such a great award, he’s briefly dropped by. (holds up phone) Hello?
SG: (laughs) Hello? Can you hear me? Can you hear me
JM: We can hear you!

SG: I’m currently also watching it through live broadcast. I want to convey my thanks to the ARMYs who gave us this Album Award, and to be able to receive it once again after last year – this is the most beloved album of the year, right? We worked hard preparing for it in America before bringing it back here, and many people loved it so we were thankful. And especially to hear that it’s ‘Album of the Year’ – I’m seeing it now too, and it really does good. Ah (laughs).

I want to stand on stage, and I’m working hard at rehabilitation, so don’t worry too much, everyone. People around me are contacting me to say they’re enjoying MAMA right now, but they were saying that even though I’m not there (laughs) So, though it’s a little embarrassing, my heart is with you, everyone, so I want to say that I’m thankful. ARMY, I love you!

BTS: Whoo!
SG: Ah, ah. This was BTS. 2, 3 –
BTS: (bows) Thank you, ARMY!
RM: Thank you for the first ever untact speech, SUGA hyung!

Worldwide Fans Choice

JH: Wow, worldwide!
V: Worldwide~ (brings Jin closer)

JK: I will first begin the award speech by conveying our thanks to those more precious than any other, our ARMYs. Thank you so much, everyone. (bows)

There was a period of time when we only had passion, spirit, and resentment, but then we met you, and through you, we were able to learn of sincerity, hearts filled with a variety of emotions, and love, and awaken such feelings within us. And that was delivered – delivered to us – and by being able to learn of this, I believe we were able to deliver our sincerity to a greater number of people.

And I believe it is through the repetition of this, and the great synergy this achieved, that ARMYs all over the world were able to recognise us. So we thank you so much, and for spending your precious moments with us, thank you so so much. ARMY, please make sure to be happy, and it’d be good if we could continue to make a lot of good memories together. I love you. (ENG) Thank you!

BTS: Thank you ARMY!

Best Music Video

JH: Whoo! Music video!
J: Yeah~
V: Yes, hello, ARMY. We received the Music Video award! Woohoo!
J: Wow!

V: Thanks to our ARMY, many people watched our music video. And to the directors who shot this great music video – Director Lumpens-nim, Director Hyunwoo-nim, the directors, lighting directors, etc – all the directors who worked hard for our video, as well as our staff and Big Hit family, thank you so much. And our new Director Jungkook-nim shot ‘Life Goes On’ so well, I want to convey my thanks to Director Jungkook-nim too.
(JK salutes from the side)
V: We finished this year with ‘Life Goes On’, and next year we plan to come bearing an incredible music video, so please await it eagerly and in the future, we will be a BTS that only delivers love to you. Thank you. (bows)

BTS: Thank you!
JH: (ENG) Congrats, Lumpens!
J: (ENG) Lumpens, thank you!
RM: Lumpens!

Worldwide Icon of the Year (Daesang)
(Note: RM gave this speech in English.)

Best Male Group

J: Yes, hello, we’re BTS. I believe it’s thanks to ARMY that we’ve been able to receive ‘Best Male Group’. Honestly, because of COVID-19 this year, many of our plans fell to pieces, and we too felt melancholy and hollow, but thanks to the cheers of ARMY, ‘Life Goes On’ and ‘Dynamite’ was able to be released.

I want to convey our thankfulness to ARMY, for being our motivation and our driving force so that we’re able to continue, and since it is a ‘Best Group’ award, I want to thank my members for doing so well without any problems, and to SUGA, who is watching this over tv broadcast, you’re our member too, so I want to congratulate you too. ARMY, thank you!

BTS: Thank you ARMY!

Song of the Year

RM: Thank you so much. There are so many things I want to say, and they’re not well organised in my head, but I’ll still try to speak each and every word calmly. MAMA was actually the only award ceremony we were not invited to at our debut, and so we had really wanted to come, and it was the award ceremony we envied, but with time passing, we’ve been able to receive such big awards for consecutive years, so it’s deeply moving.

To tell you the truth, ‘Dynamite’ is a song that came to us like the first snow in these tragic circumstances when we were having to take steps back. It’s a song for which we too did not expect to receive this much love.

Honestly, in a period that is so difficult for everyone, our hearts felt heavy and uncomfortable at times for it could feel as though we were the only ones to bring good news. However, honestly – (laughs) I really hope that my clumsy sincerity can reach you – we, at times, worry whether it is possible for us to encourage others to tread well, as the places we tread are through song and dance, with [tracks] like ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Life Goes On’ – and yet, even then – for we believe there are many people who wouldn’t be able to undertake what they usually do, and therefore wonder whether it’s right for us to say such things – and yet, even then – because we are people who sing and dance, please tolerate us as we say things like “let’s still love a tomorrow that comes searching”.

We’re sorry, and we’re thankful. And so, saying these words is saddening, joyful, and difficult, but still, time goes on, tomorrow comes, and the morning finds us, so it’d be good if, with a resolute heart and a smile, you could see it in front of us. Just like the explosiveness of ‘Dynamite’ or the confidence of the guitar melody of ‘Life Goes On’, we will tread here with our two feet, and as BTS, will work hard to live out our lives, making music and performing. Your great love is more than we deserve, and we are so thankful. It’s an honour. Thank you. (bows)

Artist of the Year

JH: Now … First, ARMY!

J: ARMY!

JH: Are you watching? I want to express how thankful I am to our ARMYs who have watched this [award ceremony] until such a late time, and really, (lifts award) through the weight of this award and the time that it is, I’m realising that it’s this time of year again and that we’re at MAMA once again.

Honestly, coming to award ceremonies every year and being able to show ourselves to you and receive so many great awards is such an honour. Well, lots has changed, but I believe that our hearts, hearts recognising this to be an honour, have not changed.

Honestly, every time we grow to reach another level, the words we hear most often are about how incredible our fans are. I want to take this moment to confirm once again that all we do on this stage, such as sharing acceptance speeches and performing, is all thanks to ARMY.

And, honestly, though it’s a little embarrassing to say in daily life, I want to take this moment to repeat – as Jin hyung did earlier – to our members, the protagonists of this ‘Artist of the Year’ award, that, this year, due to these friends, due to this team, it was possible for me to not be sick, lonely, or melancholic. I want to say once again that you worked really hard this year, and that I love you.

And, I’m not sure if he’ll be watching right now, but our SUGA hyung, it’d be good if you could make a complete recovery soon and be together with us on stage. You need to be here for this ‘Artist of the Year’ award to shine more brightly.

RM: That’s right.
JH: I’m so so thankful and I love you all. Thank you.
JK: Yoongi hyung has received an award!

JM: And to our staff, our Big Hit family – we need to be so thankful to so many people – our family, our friends, our fans. As Hobi hyung stated, this year has somehow, in some fashion, gone by. It feels as though we’ve pushed through this year, working hard; it feels like it’s flown past to the point I can barely remember any of it, but also like it’s crawled by. I don’t know what to make of it. It’s been complicated; I’ve been happy, sad, angry, felt as though things are or are not remaining.

But despite this, we survived and protected the things important to us, and I want to say to you that just like we lived through this year, we will press forward in the same way with you next year. I’m always thankful, and I love you. (bows)

V: What I want to say once more is our protocol team, our manager hyungnims: for waking us up, for cheering us on, for feeding us, and when we’re done, for saying that we’ve worked hard – the managers and staff who are the nearest to us, we’re thankful, and thankful again.

RM: Thank you, we love you!
JM: ARMY, thank you!
JH:  Thank you!
JM, JK: I love you!
JH: Let’s finish off our year well~
J: Shihyukie hyung, thanks!

Bonus.

Best Collaboration: IU’s ‘eight’ ft. SUGA
Best Executive Producer of the Year: Bang Shi Hyuk
Best Producer of the Year: Pdogg
Best Video Director of the Year: Lumpens
Best Art Director of the Year: MU:E

Melon Music Awards 2020

The 2020 Melon Music Awards (MMA) were held online over a series of days, culminating on 5 December. BTS won 6 awards at the event. Translations of their award speeches are below. Videos will be added to this page as they begin to be uploaded by the official channel. The award names are linked to the relevant tweet thread.

Top 10

V: Yes, hello, we’re BTS. Shall we say our greeting for the first time in awhile? 2, 3 –
BTS: (scattered voices) We’re BTS!
Jin: (laughs) That really didn’t work out.

V: Yes! Despite it being such a difficult time, for continuing to love our music and listening to it often, thank you. I really want to bequeath this award to ARMY. I read some of the words [shown on the screen] behind us, and I think ARMYs are ‘Re’ on the musical scale, because they’re ‘Do’ing More Than Expected and Just On The Verge of Going im’ME’nsely Passionately Crazy. I wanted to make sure to say these words. ARMY, in your hearts, we’ll always be ‘dynamite’, and we’ll make sure [to show] ‘life goes on’. We love you, and thank you!

[Note: V made use of ‘Do, Re, Mi’ on the musical scale! It’s a cheeky compliment.]

Album of the Year

RM: (reaching for the award) I’ve brought it to you!
JM: Thank you. Ah, I’m so nervous.
BTS: Ah, yes.
JM: No, really. (laughs)
RM: (ENG) Album of the Year!

JM: Thank you so much. Honestly, because the first Daesang we received was this ‘Album of the Year’ at the MMAs, receiving this award again is incredibly meaningful for us, and I’m really really happy to think we’re able to have given back to ARMY through receiving this again. And because I believe being able to receive this again is a testament to our value, I’m so happy, and to think that we, who are nothing, could receive this, I believe is a positive message to many people – [a promise that] all people can [achieve it too].

Thank you so so much, and first, to the ARMYs who are always cheering for us, we thank you and love you, and to Bang Shi Hyuk PDnim and all the Big Hit family and producers who made it possible to create such a good album, thank you so much. We’re truly grateful.

Best Dance (Male) – Dynamite

JH: AYYY! First, whenever we receive an award, we shout for ARMY – so, ARMYYY! BTS: (cheers)
JH: We really do want to convey our thanks to ARMY. And I do honestly want to say that we worked really hard on BTS’ performances this year. We began the year with Map of the Soul : 7, for which we even went over to America to learn [the choreography] and showcase a large-scale performance through ‘ON’, then incorporated modern dance to beautifully express ‘Black Swan’, and next, had our fate-like meeting with the funky disco ‘Dynamite’. We really did work hard on these.
And though we too [did work hard], delivering our speech here, it would only be right to express our thanks to –
JM: (shouts)
JH: That’s right, to the performance core of Big Hit Entertainment: Mr. Son – Teacher Son Sung Deuk – as well as Bangster Byungeun-nim, Sunghoon-nim, and though they’ve since left, our Gawonie –
JM: Gawonz!!
JH: who was part of our MOTS: 7 ON performance, we want to say we’re so so thankful. And honestly, because of our busy schedules, there is a limit to what we can do, but to our impressive dancers who sketched out the drafts of our stages and rehearsed hard, we want to send our thanks. And we plan to keep showing you cool performances in the future too, so please keep watching us with great interest and love.

Song of the Year – Dynamite

JH: JK! (hands over award)
JK: First, to our ARMYs, though they’re not here, I would like to exclaim “scream!” ARMY, scream!
(BTS screams in our stead)

JK: Ah, yes. Though you’re far, it’s as though your unified voice could be heard even from here. Yes, “Song of the Year”. As singers, one of the things that make us feel most warm is when many people are able to gain strength, receive comfort, by listening to our songs. This makes us feel very warm. And especially in such a difficult period, releasing an unintended album and receiving good results from it, and from that song – this song – to see many people gain strength made me feel really happy. And I, too, received a lot of strength through this, and in the future also, I want to keep keep making music that gives strength and comfort and have you hear it. And to our composers who helped create such a great song, and mm, to our many staff, we’re thankful. We’ll make even better songs in the future. Thank you.

BTS: Thank you!
JK: I love you!
V: Borahae!

Netizen Popularity Award

RM: Ah, this is indeed a great award!

J: ARMY! Yeah! We have been able to receive the “Netizen Popularity Award” again thanks to ARMY, and I personally think this to be the hardest award to receive. It is after all undertaken through a voting process, and we were thus only able to receive it due to the fans working hard at voting for us. For all other awards, there are many people we need to thank, but for this, I want to say thanks to ARMY. And I also read one of the comments behind us, and apparently all the chocolate factories of the world have gone bankrupt –
V: Why?
J: Because ARMYs are too sweet~
BTS: (overwhelmed)

J: Anyway, thank you so much for allowing us to receive this award, and in the future too, we’ll work hard to show you many great stages. Thank you!
RM: Thank you!

Artist of the Year

RM: Ah~ We have been able to receive such an award once again. First, we are truly thankful to everyone. Honestly, my heart isn’t completely at ease, receiving such a meaningful award in such a period. It’s actually coming up to a year now: the length of time we’ve performed without our fans in front of us, without being able to see them. I believe it would be the same for many other artists.

Honestly, in the beginning – though as recipients of such a large award, we shouldn’t complain – but this year, it’s been really hard for you, right? We, too, in the beginning, were angry, resentful, filled with despair, and even hated a thing without a name. Undergoing such experiences, we worked hard by releasing the music we could and filming music videos.

The scary thing is that from a particular point in time, we were facing versions of ourselves who had accepted this reality and as humans, humanely, had become used to it. And so we thought “we shouldn’t be getting used to this”, “we need to directly see and feel the warmth of people”. Getting used to it was scary.

But honestly, ironically enough, what we felt most clearly this year was that the sincerity we had spread throughout the world until now had not been in vain. Though we cannot currently see each other, reach each other, hold each other’s hand, and embrace each other, we are connected, and our hearts do reach each other. We were able to confirm this through “Dynamite” and “Be”. The letters that you sent, the words that you sent, like those behind me – oh, they’re not behind me now! – were able to confirm your love and sincerity.

And in a situation where, just like us, many artists are unable to perform, they too in their own rooms and studios, will be making music, albums, with their utmost strength, and those artists’ fans will indeed begin and end their days with their songs. In our individual places, we are all trying our best. I want to believe that. And so, I don’t know what’ll happen, but I would like it if, in our own places, through our own mediums, in order to reach others, we were able to pierce this long, long winter until the coming of spring, survive together and in doing so, live. The seasons will return, and life does go on, so let’s have faith that spring will come, and I would like it if you could continue living with me. This year, you all suffered greatly, and I’m really really thankful and love you. Yes. You worked hard.

V: And additionally, what we need to say here is that we are in fact seven, not six. To our final one member who is watching this via video, to our SUGA hyung, if I could say one thing, it would be that we’ve received a lot of awards today, and it’d be good if in your joy, hyung too could quickly [continue to] make many happy memories with us. Get better soon!

JH: And the song ‘eight’ was nominated a lot~ It’s a song our SUGA hyung composed so –
RM: I think he’ll be happy
JH: Yeah, yeah. Hyung, you’re the best.
V: Eat a lot of food today.

JM: And finally – oh, not finally –
RM: Oh, that’s fine~
JM: As Namjoon hyung said earlier, I do think it was a really difficult situation for everyone due to COVID-19. So, for us, with our members, and from ARMYs, we received a lot of strength and were able to rise again, but it’d be good if many people, not just our ARMYs, could receive even a little strength by listening to our music. We’re always thankful and we’ll work even harder in the future. (bows)

BTS: Thank you!

JH: And we have to say – to Hitman Bang, our Bang Shihyuk PDnim, I’d like to express our thanks and – is there more we should say? – Oh, and Big Hit Entertainment! All our staff –
JM: (And the staff)
JH: Oh, our staff – honestly, there are SO many people to thank –
V: Our protocol team –
JH: That’s right, there’s no end! We’re so thankful, and
J: Our parents
JH: Our parents –
(JK whispers something in JH’s ear)
JH: Ah~ And this – what do you call it – this Artist award is the blooming flower of the award ceremony, so thank you so much, ARMYs, for making us flowers. We love you. (finger heart)

BTS: Thank you!
V: We borahae you!
JK: Take care of your health, everyone.

Bonus.

Best Performance Director – Son Sung Deuk

J: Moa, your father won an award!
SSD: (laughs) Hello, I’m Big Hit Entertainment’s Performance Director and BTS’ Choreographer, Son Sung Deuk. Yes, I want to first convey my thanks for being given such a precious award.

To Bang Shi Hyuk producer-nim and the whole Big Hit family, especially the best performance director team, and to my many colleagues, I want to convey my thanks. And to the members of BTS, who always showcase such passionate performances on stage, I want to say how thankful I am. And to those who are my great strength beside me, the family that I love, Bitna, Moa, and Hoa, I want to say that I’m thankful and that I love you.

With even greater performances and choreography in the future, I hope to share great comfort and great feeling to many. As a choreographer and director, I will work even harder in the future. Thank you.

Lyric Translation

숨을 참고서 나의 바다로 들어간다 간다
Holding my breath, into my sea do I go, go

아름답고도 슬피 우는 나를 마주한다
I meet myself, lovely though crying

저 어둠 속의 날
To myself, in that darkness

찾아가 말하고 싶어
I want to seek him out and speak these words –

오늘은 널 더 알고 싶다고 yeah
that today, I want to know you more, yeah

🌊 아직도 나는 내게 머물러있다
I still stay with me

목소린 나오질 않고 맴돌고만 있다
My voice doesn’t come out, I’m only circling you

저 까만 곳
That dark place

잠기고 싶어 가보고 싶어
I want to drown in it, I want to go there

I’ll be there 🌊

오늘도 또 너의 주위를 맴돈다
Today, too, I circle you

너에게 갈수록 숨이 차오르고 넌 더 멀어지는 것 같아
The further I go towards you, I seem to be more out of breath, and you only seem to get further away

더 깊은 바다로 들어간 건 아닐까 yeah
Have you perhaps entered an even deeper sea, yeah

저 바닷속의 날
To myself, in that sea,

찾아가 말하고 싶어
I want to seek him out and speak these words –

오늘은 널 더 알고 싶다고 yeah
that today, I want to know you more, yeah

🌊

오늘도 이렇게 너의 곁으로 눈을 감는다
Today, too, I close my eyes near you

Message

Hello, it’s Jin.

Recently, in a press conference, I said words such as this
“I don’t like to share my sad feelings with the fans. This is because I only want to show them the good things. However, I feel differently if it’s through music. I don’t like to share it through my everyday actions, but I think it would be okay to  show them through music.”

To tell you the truth, I was severely burnt out recently, and I think it was because I had many thoughts regarding myself.

I received congratulations from many people regarding the 1st place on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart, but I wondered whether I deserved to receive such things..

There are honestly a lot of people who love music and are better at music than me, so is it okay for me to receive such joy and congratulations..

I had such thoughts, and it was delving further into this that made my heart heavy and want to lay down all things.

I received counselling regarding this issue and spent each day as they were before having a conversation with Bang PD who suggested whether I’d like to express such feelings through music.

I gave the response that I didn’t have the confidence to make it well, was worried the end result wouldn’t be good, and was already at a level in which such things would not be acceptable.. but Bang PD said such things weren’t important. But if I was to do it, he promised that I would do well, and he would find someone who would match well with me.

It is in this way I was able to meet composer Bumju Gye hyungnim and speak to him about many things including my feelings.

It turns out he’s a bright and positive person. Hyungnim said he wanted to help me and said with positive strength, “Let’s try writing about many anxieties~ If it doesn’t work out, we can simply try again”, which brightened me up again.

We spoke about many things in such a way, and he was able to make a track that expressed my feelings as they were in that very place, and by using this as a vehicle to write about the things I wanted to say, ‘Abyss’ was finished. I want to say once again that I’m thankful to Bumju Gye.

It’s a sort of depressing song that doesn’t befit a birthday, but I thought it would be more awkward to release it on a day that wasn’t my birthday, so I have indeed released ‘Abyss’.

ARMYs, even if its lacking, please listen to it well.

ps. Thank you to our leader-nim who wrote the lyrics for the chorus.

‘Thanks To’ (Be)

Each album has individual ‘Thanks To’ letters written by the members. These are the ones for Be, their November 2020 album. I’m still in the midst of translating these, so please check back soon for the rest.

RMs ‘Thanks To’

A year which really suits the word ‘위축’ (‘to shrink’ or ‘wither’) for a variety of reasons.
This of course accounts for our bodies that had to spend
a great deal of time indoors,
but it’s also a year which, above all, shrunk our wills and withered our souls.
I, too, was busily overcome
by anger, frustration, and sadness.

And yet. I, as RM,
and we, in the name of Bangtan.
Recalling the many stars
turned toward us,
we resolutely rise once more.
This album is a record of us rising up.
We could not be 위축 forever, and
we, after all, did not want to be that way.

A time in which we are all at least a little 위축.
I thank all those at Big Hit, who
overcame the stiffness and various fatigues
that surged through like waves every morning to
complete this record together with us.
You are now like my friends.
I thank my family, friends, colleagues who
continue to be my inspiration and comfort, my role models.
And to my Bangtan friends, who,
in all situations, trust each other and run forward.

And to the one who protects me in the day like the sun and budding plant, and in the night like the moon and lakeside.
To the one who watches over me, who is currently reading these words – to you do I desire to send my greatest love and thanks.
In the hopes that these sounds pass over boundaries and gaps.
That they’d pass over person and person.
That they’d pass over ‘Bangtan’ and ‘ARMY’ and get through to you.
I would like to be your pebble.
I love you.

SUGA’s ‘Thanks To’

In a time frustrating for all people around the world,
we worked on this album
in the hope that we could be
even a small strength to our ARMYs
As much as you miss us, we too
miss you all
It would be good if these times
passed as soon as possible and
Bangtan and ARMY could become even closer…
I miss you, ARMY

[Thank yous to Bang PD and CEO Yoon; management, conditioning, and VC teams; the hair and make-up team who have him look ‘somewhat human’, and allow him to do schedules ‘like a human’; stylists; photographers.]

I will be your strength whenever you have need for it
It would be good if you could travel with this music,
resting in it in times of difficulty Thank you

V’s ‘Thanks To’

These days, there are a great number of thoughts that come to me.
I so readily remember how performances
were always filled with ARMYs / Recently, I was watching
old concert videos again, and I felt strange
I felt a little blank, and though our videos,
our performances can be seen by ARMYs,
I want to quickly, with certainty.. meet ARMYs soon
And when that time comes, I’m going to pour out [all I have]
to the point you’ll think that the things you saw through video did not at all capture our scope, and I’m going to show you exactly why we need ARMYs on that stage
I want to make sure to show you BTS,
who perform for ARMY
I’ll wait
ARMY, please wait for us also.
(This ‘Thanks to’ has become a letter to ARMYs, but, well..)
My family, those involved with the company, friends, members, ARMY
There are many people precious to me
Let’s all begin today with a smile
I thank you for existing, and
I love you a lot
I won’t change

Stay

“Stay” is the 7th track of Be, the BTS album released in November 2020. It was produced and written by Arston, Jung Kook, RM, Jin.

A line-by-line translation follows the clean version. English lyrics are italicised, and the stanzas are left as they are in the original.

Clean Translation

Was it a dream?
I thought I saw you
When I open my eyes, it’s again
a room devoid of people

I quietly cast a spell
A heart that beats louder than ever
In this moment, whenever it is, wherever we are
Together, wherever yeah
(Wherever yeah)

I think even repetition is a blessing

I don’t know my inner feelings either
Isn’t there a way I could see you?
I quietly try clasping my two hands
An unchanging tomorrow
Like a crazy person, I keep sayin’
Wherever you are
I know you always stay

In the place that cloud passed over,
Stay
with dry lips, I say to you
Stay, stay, stay, stay…
(Always)

🌊  Yeah I know you always stay
Yeah I know you always stay
Yeah I know you always stay

✨  On this radiant today,
for everyone,
Oh every night and day
Yeah I know you always stay

Right at this moment, I think of you
What does it matter,
where you are?
We connect to 7G
It ain’t the end of the world
The present, it shine like a pearl

Though it’s a mere couple of waves,
I’m going to leave you changed

I quietly cast a spell
A star that looks brighter than ever
In this moment, whenever it is, wherever we are
Wherever you are
I know you always stay

In the sea that wind passed over,
Stay
with frozen lips, I say to you
Stay, stay, stay, stay…
(Always)

🌊

A cold wind blows over
Stretch out your hand, feel my breath
With our eyes closed, it turns out
we’re already together

가만히 난 주문을 걸어
I quietly cast a spell

Dis-ease

“Dis-ease” is the 6th track of Be, the BTS album released in November 2020. It was produced and written by j-hope, Ivan Jackson Rosenberg, GHSTLOOP, RM, Pdogg, SUGA, Jimin, Randy Runyon.

A line-by-line translation and explanation follows the clean version. English lyrics are italicised and the stanzas are left as they are in the original. One addition for this album: because so many of the lyrics clearly represent the member that voices them, I’ve made a note of the artist when they sing or rap alone. Here, I’ve concentrated it to the verses.

Clean Translation

j-hope
It feels like I’ve let something pass me by
With a sip of coffee, I swallow my unease
An endless rest
A discomforting joy that has come to me so suddenly

24 hours, there’s so much time
Even if I sleep all day, there’s no problem right now
It feels as though I should be doing something to the point my body shatters,
but I’m just a bastard who eats all three meals
My sin, a dog that rips a resting me apart
Even if I shout “don’t do that”, I’m strangling myself over results
Errday do ma thang, damn if I fail
I keep growling, I tap the rotten rope
I feel unsettled, this is a disease
Physical things are a stun given to me by my career

💊  Maybe

It’s because I’m sick
Blame it on the fact that I think too much
I hate that
A foolish young me, unable to keep things simple
I’m actually really young, just with the body of an adult
I’m limping through the walk of life
One for the laugh, two for the show
Just like I’m so fine

👟  Everyday, I comfort myself
We’re all just people, ain’t so special

Ay man keep one, two step
Let’s calmly try to treat everyone
My disease
Di-di-di-di-disease
Throw it away, the fear
Fe-fe-fe-fe-fear

RM
My heart needs a holiday too
Gosh, just think of work as work
I’m ill, yeah, I’m work itself
That friend called ‘rest’, oh I never liked him
How much do you have to earn to be happy?
This glass-like disease hits your head
I’m confused whether it’s me or the world that’s diseased
Even when I take off my glasses, the darkness doesn’t get misty
Whatever label is stuck to describe this time,
I hope that it’s all you
Your you, you

SUGA
Everyone has a lot of diseases. What confuses me is
that humans by nature host to things awful;
that the diseases of the heart number over 400
and there aren’t many that don’t fit into a category
Yo, is it me or the world that’s diseased
Is it simply the difference in interpretations
Is that all
I don’t know, faster than changing a person
is changing me

(Sick  tired)
But I don’t wanna mess up
Cause life goes on
(Through the fire)
I’ll walk it, as who I am, woah
(Walk it, walk it, walk it)
When it turns to night, I want to close my two eyes and
(Walk it, walk it, walk it)
trust the person I know I used to be

Now, stand up, one more time
It’s morning again, I need to live today out
Let’s go, one more night
I don’t know what’ll be at the end of this, ayy

There’s no eternal night
I’ve become stronger
Fireworks burst
I will never fade away

It feels as though I should be doing something to the point my body shatters,

마냥 삼시 세끼 다 먹는 나란 새끼

세끼 and 새끼 are pronounced in the same way, and can also describe a young animal, setting the scene for the next few lines.

내 죄, 쉬는 내 자신을 물어뜯는 개
My sin, a dog that rips a resting me apart
-게 is a syllable added to a verb to create an adverb, but it’s also pronounced in the same way as 개 (‘dog’). The following lines continue his zoomorphism, describing himself as a dog on a leash.

Don’t do that 외쳐봐도 성과에 목매 매일
Even if I shout “don’t do that”, I’m strangling myself over results
목매다 literally means to hang yourself, and is used metaphorically too, much like in English.

Cause life goes on

(Through the fire)

걸어갈게 더 나답게 woah
I’ll walk it, as who I am, woah

(Walk it, walk it, walk it)

밤이 되면 내 두 눈 감고서
When it turns to night, I want to close my two eyes and

(Walk it, walk it, walk it)

내가 알던 날 다시 믿을래
trust the person I know I used to be

자 일어나 one more time
Now, stand up, one more time

다시 아침이야 오늘을 나야 해
It’s morning again, I need to live today out

가보자고 one more night
Let’s go, one more night

이 끝에 뭐가 있을지 몰라 ayy
I don’t know what’ll be at the end of this, ayy

영원한 밤은 없어
There’s no eternal night
Make It Right: “In an eternal night for which an end could not be seen, / You are the one who gifted me with the morning”
Spring Day: “The morning will come again, / for no darkness, no season / can be eternal”

난 강해졌어
I’ve become stronger

불꽃이 터져
Fireworks burst

I will never fade away

👟

버려 겁겁겁 버려
Throw it away, fearfearfear, throw it away

Two interpretations
At first, I thought this track was about the disease of overworking and being overworked, but I think the last stanzas dismantle that. The blazing, positive determination showcased there doesn’t seem to reflect what would be a grim reality if this premise was true: deciding to grit his teeth and simply power through the stress, exhaustion, and anxiety of work, waylaid by meagre promises of material goods and the gaslighting by those around him saying the problem isn’t the system, it’s himself.

It must instead be about the disease of overthinking in your work rather than just going for it, about drowning in frustrations and anxieties due to abrupt changes and destroyed dreams. Said another way, the disease is a dis-ease in the present reality. This allows for the track to be the light to Track 3’s shadow, and fall firmly within the theme of the whole album. Big Hit’s press release did after all describe BE to be about their “feelings about this situation—fear and anxiety mingled with the determination to overcome all this. The album contains the band’s emotions and ruminations they had throughout this year, and the story of “us” continuing the existential journey.”
