Notes

The narrator is trapped within a fake love; a love in which he has not been able to stay true to himself. Due to the pressure brought on by himself to be wanted, he has changed himself – and ruined himself. He recognises this. And yet, he makes the active choice to only burrow deeper into this fake love, for it’s the only way he foresees that has him continue to be with the other.

• RM explained in an interview with Liam McEwan for J-14 that “this time we want to focus on some of the parts of love that we want to run away from, so the name is Tear, and the main single title is going to be ‘Fake Love’. We want to say that, if you’re not true to yourself, love won’t last. And the love could be between a person and person, but it could be between me and myself.”
• The symbolism of them becoming a doll is utilised effectively in their choreography, and the metaphors of the flower unable to bloom and the mask are carried through into later songs.
• The change of tense is crucial in creating a timeline of events that occur within this song. The following track also has a timeline of sorts, but that is a slow, winding journey that blossoms as softly as a flower … and falls apart in the most delicate manner. This however, just like the ideas it holds, is jagged. The tense jumps around, as does the syntax, reflecting the colourful explosion of frustration.
